Industry Design Project

Ashen Tor House was designed with a mission to promote a seamless bond between the occupants and the surrounding atmosphere. Integral aspects envisioned for the finalized design include the incorporation of natural materials, greenery, and a neutral color palette. The style combines the robustness of Brutalist structural features with Organic Modernism.

The design necessitated for an open-plan living configuration that facilitates an effortless connection between the indoor and outdoor environment. The home is designed to cater for a family of four with two children and provide a separate suite for extended family members visiting periodically. Moreover, an important aspect of the design is to capitalize on the panoramic views and allow an ample influx of natural sunlight into the interior.

Site Surroundings & Design Formation

Situated on the outskirts of Halcombe the design for Ashen Tor House has been placed on a 2-acre lifestyle block. The site features stunning views of the rolling hills and Ruahine Ranges towards the North-westerly. The layout of the home has been purposefully designed to provide the Main living areas access to a vast majority of the all-day sun. Centrally located within the heart of the home is an enclosed courtyard boasting a privately planted nature escape free from wind disturbance.  The Master Suite is situated overhead the courtyard providing views of the home beneath; with close access to the bedrooms of the client’s children below.

Presentation Documentation

This residence promotes open-plan living that seamlessly integrates the indoor and outdoor spaces, brightening the spaces with natural light and fully utilizing the magnificent scenery. The unique triangular form is supported by an elaborate Vierendeel truss structure, creating a captivating architectural design not commonly found in residential properties. The rolling roof slopes around the home, creating a harmonious connection between the structure and the natural environment. A green roof and a private planted courtyard, featuring a living wall, further emphasizes the home’s dedication towards sustainability. The structure is composed of timber and steel framing with a pristine white plaster finish that draws inspiration from the frosty peaks of the Ruahine Ranges. The home is clad in a vertical lap cedar cladding enriching the home’s connection with the land while surrounded by modernism.
