Arcadia Art Gallery

Traditionally an art gallery is a place that you go to learn, read and view art but as a student there can be sensory overload and overwhelm of information. This building responds to the needs of the Te Aro university students to create a sensory-friendly experience, a place to play, create, reflect, discover or unwind.
The design has been developed in the same playful nature, deriving design elements from the site, games and tactile interaction. The design is socially accessible, driven by the intention to create an inclusive experience, offering stimulation and sanctuary. The building aims to motivate and empower individuals to create and find self-discovery in a place of prospect, refuge and retreat. Upstairs the gallery’s celebrates play and creation, with AR displays to reimagine the street below, transforming everyday views into portals of possibility.

The central Public Gallery connects all the spaces with a treehouse inspired spiral staircase with spaces connected through archways and material transitions. Timber-slatted tunnels act as sound buffers and water collectors, creating a gentle ambience during the rainy study period. A glass plutonic Dodecahedron refracts light as rainbows down through the tunnel.
