Island Bay Library Design
The Island Bay Library design draws inspiration from the surrounding natural environment and local community, creating a sustainable and accessible space for all users. The building features a woven floor plan centered around a planted courtyard beneath the first floor, establishing a harmonious connection between interior spaces and the lush vegetation outside. Parametric tree-like columns support the courtyard, forming elegant arches that echo natural tree structures while providing spaces for occupants to relax and engage with nature.
The elevated design responds to environmental considerations, mitigating 100-year flood risk, enhancing views of the surrounding hillscape, and optimizing natural sunlight while minimizing overshadowing from nearby buildings. Careful analysis of noise, sunlight, and wind informs the building’s form and placement to ensure a comfortable and welcoming environment.

Form & Site Development
The design for the Island Bay Library features a weaved floor plan with a central planted courtyard beneath the first floor – creating a harmonious connection to the surrounding lush vegetation. The branching Facade mimics a tree canopy, allowing shards of natural light to decorate the interior with organic shapes and patterns. The angular roof and facade design emphasize natural lighting by illustrating the varying light levels during the summer and winter solstices throughout different times of the day. The design incorporates parametric tree columns beneath the central courtyard creating elegant arch forms that echo natural tree structures while providing a space for occupants to relax and connect with nature.

Modelling & Experimentation
Various facades and over layering of branching members diffuses light while adding character and detail to the exterior of the building. The central courtyard allow natural lighting to illuminate the walkway spaces while connecting the interior to the external planted courtyard.
